Big news! Hackers have cracked the brand new PSP fir-- No, wait, sorry. We got our posts out of order. What we meant to say is that Sony has just released the brand new PSP firmware: Version 3.72. If you're interested, you can get the fresh new firmware through the PSP's "Network Update" feature.
If you don't have a PS3 though, it may not be worth your time, as it seems like the only functionality it adds is expanded support for PlayStation Network titles. We'd bet there's some under-the-hood type stuff designed to thwart hackers once and for all hidden within though, if you're a glutton for futility.

Besides the tons of great UMD games that have been available for the PSP from the get go, I can play flash games for free from within its built-in web browser - see http://www.psponme.com/list_psp.asp?cat=Arcade for some examples. Also I can download great demos from places like http://demos.pspfanboy.com/ and videos, subscribe to RSS feeds and so on. The PSP even supports locationfree content. Plays MP3s (visualizers included), photos (slideshows sharing) etc. And with a steady stream of free firmware upgrades the systems feature set keeps evolving.

Why is it that EVERY mention of the PSP news draws 1). sarcasm from JQ editors and 2). belligerent fanboyism from the Nintendo contingent?
Look folks, the PSP has indeed had good games almost from the get-go - its initial assortment was certainly better than the dismal library the DS had for its first 10 or so months. Nowadays with some really standout titles and high metascores, only the diehard haters are the ones saying there's 'no good games'.
You don't need to buy any extra hardware to do homebrew on PSP - or 'dodge draconian corporate firmwares' (if Sony didn't try to lock out piracy, what would that do to the developer scene?). Sorry PSP bashers, the DS homebrew scene doesn't measure up by comparison. Buy a new Slim and slap M33 on there. Bricked? Build Pandora's Battery with your old 'fat' PSP and you're good.
So. No good games? Refuted. Difficult/futile homebrew? Refuted. Metascores mean nothing? Refuted.
HOWEVER. All is not rosy in Sonyworld, of course. This is the company that wrote the book on locked-down APIs and drivers/utils that ought to be free. You have to BUY the video converter, the new Slim can't output 480i gameplay to SDTVs nor can it zoom/scale said gameplay output, UMD movies still cost too much on average and the US market is still lacking all the colors (red, blue, plus the other lighter colors that debute in Japan) as well as the GPS and camera.
Not to mention, Sony's attempts at marketing/advertising have to date been an embarrassment ('Dude, get your own' ads have huge cringe-factor). So Sony certainly sucks in many ways, but the PSP itself and its library do not - fanboy bashing be damned.

Im very dissapointed with my PSP. Why did Sony make a handheld system that they are not going to make quality games for. My DS gets way more playtime. Its just slim pickens with it and no I dont watch UMD movies. Ill just be waiting on God of War I guess.

seriously, don't you get bored of bashing Sony? I mean, use your head at least now and then, focus on teh weak points, not on the strong points, the PSP has a far better library of games than the DS, so your point is stupid to say the least...not going to bother to even show those metacritics numbers to you since, well, you ll just won't even take them into consideration...

I've no idea what you're talking about. Given that Sony has never been a core software developer, I wouldn't expect them to make software, but instead hardware with usable potential. And there ARE good games for the PSP. It's just that like the PSX/PS2, with sufficient quantity of games, there'll be generally more quality games for the DS. It also helps that there's a top software exclusive developer for the DS (namely, Nintendo).

mr nimblewick,
there are 2 kind of opinions, the educated ones and the ignorant ones, I enjoy sharing opinions, so long as they are educated ones, but when someone says something just for the hell of it, then yes, I have a problem with that.
Jody,
Metacritics does mean something, its a database of scores/ratings, I know the DS has fantastic games (although, even though I have a DS, Im not interested in most of them), yet you have to admit that the PSP has the MORE quality games (more games that are 80+) and that DS has the BEST quality games (3 titles that are 90+)
and yes, fcking bats...

There are, in fact, more than 2 types of opinions. You are confusing "opinion" with "facts and lies," something it seems a lot of people do.
By their very definition, opinions are personal and therefore infinite. When someone disagrees with you, it doesn't immediately mean they're wrong. And if you think it does, well...

mmmm....
"Im very dissapointed with my PSP"
It's an opinion, and I don't really care
"Why did Sony make a handheld system that they are not going to make quality games for."
It's an opinion once again, he believes that Sony has no quality games for his PSP
"My DS gets way more playtime. Its just slim pickens with it and no I dont watch UMD movies."
Opinion, and I don't care
"Ill just be waiting on God of War I guess."
Opinion once again.
As you can see, this is a blog, and unless what is said is based on a valid source, and its proven, everything stated stays as an opinion...
"A belief or conclusion held with confidence but not substantiated by positive knowledge or proof"
So yes, like I stated, there are educated opinions and ignorant ones (ones that would be based on nothing but just mere guess since there is no knowledge on the matter or something related to it, and/or no valid sources)

Noshino --- Admittedly, I've always put SYPHON FILTER on backburner to my obvious fav' series; but the new PSP releases of 'Filter have been pretty good. I might have to go back and rent/play the other games.
For games like SMACKDOWN!vsRAW08, I hope they continue the trend of console-to-handheld connectivity (for the Wii/DS and PS3/PS2/PSP versions).

"It's the one that doesn't support music, pictures, movies, web browsing, changing the backlight mid-game, returning to the system menu without a power-off, wallpapers, or custom themes. That one."
That sounds about right.

Why would I want my GAME system to play music, pictures, movies, or browse the web? Why does it need wallpapers or themes of any kind, anyway? It's not like I'm going to be staring at the wallpaper while playing a game.
The other two I'll give you, though returning to the system menu without resetting is a really minor thing.

I haven't touched it in years. I said I would get a large mem stick and download games onto it, but I've never got around to it.

Funny, because I can get all that stuff for the cost of a flashcart and memory stick. And I don't have to constantly dodge a draconian corporations attempt to curb my use of the hardware.

Pretty much every company wants to protect their products, Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, Apple, etc,
Imagine what would happen if the products were to be bricked or damaged somehow? If they weren't to have policies against it, they would have to pay for all of those repairs, how many thousands (or millions) that would be?
and you that are on NDF should know better, Nintendo is the worse, hell, they even use this special security screws...

The release notes give a nice hint as to what's coming in PS3 2.00 firmware. With Remote Start, I've got something I don't have on my PC-based Media Center. I'll be able to store videos on the PS3, and turn it on only when I want to watch something.

My firmware is still 1.50 and even though it's haxxed to bits, I still don't use it. Probably because I'm too lazy to do cool stuff with it.

The most that i use my psp for is the MP3 player.
Posted: Oct 30th 2007 4:30PM Crono141 said
For me, the PSP was too damn big to be a decent MP3 player. The DS is a better size, but honestly still too big. The standard Ipod is the perfect size for music, but the screen is too damn small. If they made an iPod the same physical dimensions as the current standard, only made the whole face a touchscreen, that would be the perfect media player.
For all I know it already exists. I'm not current on the current iCulture.
